Miles Davis Centennial Arranging Contest
PRESENTED BY
Overview
ArrangeMe is proud to partner with global independent music company Reservoir, the publisher of Miles Davis’s catalog, along with his estate, Miles Davis Properties, LLC, to present a special arranging contest in celebration of the Miles Davis Centennial.
Born on May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois, Miles Davis is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians in history. A visionary trumpeter, composer, bandleader, painter, and style icon, Davis spent five decades redefining sound and reshaping the boundaries of creative expression. His relentless spirit of reinvention influenced generations of musicians, and left an enduring imprint on fashion, film, visual art, and global culture.
This contest offers arrangers a unique opportunity to reinterpret a Miles Davis composition and leave their own creative mark on his timeless catalog. Submissions are due on Davis’s 100th birthday on May 26, 2026, and will be evaluated by a panel of world-class adjudicators including Alan Baylock (University of North Texas), Ayn Inserto (Berklee College of Music), Annie Booth (University of Colorado, Boulder), Vincent Wilburn Jr., Erin Davis, and more. Winning and finalist arrangements will be announced later in the summer and featured in Hal Leonard's Fall 2026 marketing promotion, with the opportunity for winners to have their charts recorded by a top collegiate ensemble, along with additional prizes from Hal Leonard, MilesDavis.com, and ArrangeMe. See below for comprehensive details on the contest.

Judging
All eligible Entries will be evaluated; there is no public voting component.
Round 1 – Preliminary Judging
Following the end of the Contest Period, all eligible Entries will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges (the “Judging Panel”), which may include jazz educators, composers, arrangers, and other industry professionals.
Entries will be judged within their respective category and division using the official Miles Davis Centennial Arranging Contest Scoring Rubric, a five-category, 1-5 point scale (25 points possible). The five scored categories are:
- Concept & Stylistic Voice — originality, jazz identity, and coherence of artistic intent
- Melody Treatment & Harmonic Imagination — imaginative yet logical handling of melodic material and reharmonization
- Ensemble Texture, Color, and Balance — effective use of instrumentation, register, and blend
- Form, Flow, and Use of Space — narrative structure, pacing, transitions, and expressive use of silence
- Score & Parts, Clarity, and Playability — notational accuracy, idiomatic ranges, and rehearsal-readiness
Judges may also provide written comments (non-scored) on “Miles-Inspired Elements,” including: use of space, contrast, and understatement; modal or coloristic harmonic language; subtle use of timbre (mutes, textures, dynamics); and risk-taking that serves the music.
The Judging Panel will select a group of finalists in each category and division based on overall scores and qualitative assessments.
Round 2 – Final Judging
Finalist Entries will then be reviewed by a smaller panel that may include representatives of the Miles Davis Properties, LLC, Reservoir, and additional invited artists, along with Round 1 judges.
This panel will select:
- One (1) Winner for each category and division; and
- One (1) or more Finalists/Runner-up entries for each category and division.
In the event of a tie, Sponsor may appoint an additional judge or apply tie-breaking criteria (for example, the highest score in Concept & Stylistic Voice) at its sole discretion. Sponsor’s decisions regarding judging and winners are final and binding.

Scoring Rubric
Five Categories • 1 - 5 Scale • 25 Points Possible
Category 1 - Concept & Stylistic Voice
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | The arrangement presents a clear and original musical concept, with several memorable ideas, that feels rooted in jazz tradition and personally distinctive. Stylistic choices in melody, harmony, pacing, and groove show a strong, coherent artistic identity. |
| 4 | The concept is solid and stylistically informed, with several memorable ideas. The arrangement mostly sustains its identity, though some sections feel safer or less defined; stylistic choices are generally appropriate. |
| 3 | The concept is functional and recognizable within the jazz idiom but leans on familiar moves more than distinctive ideas. Some choices feel generic or underdeveloped; the arranging voice is emerging but not strongly defined. |
| 2 | The overall idea is unclear or inconsistent. Style may shift abruptly, and important sections feel like placeholders rather than deliberate statements, relying on stock patterns. |
| 1 | The piece lacks a coherent artistic concept. Stylistic references are unfocused or contradictory, and the listener is left without a clear sense of the arranger’s intent. |
Category 2 - Melody Treatment & Harmonic Imagination
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Melodic material is treated with respect and imagination; transitions feel organic and musically necessary. Harmonic choices are imaginative yet logical, and reharmonization deepens the character of the tune without sacrificing clarity. |
| 4 | Melodic ideas are handled thoughtfully, with some creative departures from the original. Harmonic choices generally make musical sense, though a few moves are less convincing. Reharmonization supports the tune overall. |
| 3 | Treatment of melody and harmony is mostly conventional and safe. The tune is presented clearly, but transformations and reharmonizations are modest or sporadic; strength varies from moment to moment. |
| 2 | Melodic handling is sometimes awkward. Harmonic decisions can feel random, cluttered, or confusing, weakening the tune rather than enhancing it. |
| 1 | Melody and harmony frequently don’t support each other. The identity of the tune may be obscured, and harmonic writing undermines phrase shape, tension, and release. |
Category 3 - Ensemble Texture, Color, and Balance
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Instrumentation is used with great imagination and control. Textures evolve naturally, instrumental combinations create compelling color, and balance ensures clarity of melody, inner lines, and backgrounds with sensitive register choices. |
| 4 | The ensemble is used well, with a variety of effective textures and colors. Some balance or register issues appear but the overall sound is cohesive and engaging; writing is mostly idiomatic. |
| 3 | Texture and color are serviceable but limited. Some sections or instruments are overused or underused, and certain passages feel thick, thin, or monochrome; balance issues appear but do not dominate. |
| 2 | Textures often feel cluttered or empty without clear intention. Important lines are buried or unsupported, and registers are sometimes chosen in ways that strain or cover key material. |
| 1 | The ensemble sound is frequently unbalanced or unclear. Melodies and important ideas are regularly obscured, and the scoring shows little understanding of how instruments work together. |
Category 4 - Form, Flow, and Use of Space
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | The piece unfolds with a strong narrative sense. Form is clear and purposeful, transitions feel natural, arcs of tension and release are well shaped, and space is used confidently so phrases and climaxes can breathe. |
| 4 | Structure is logical and generally well paced. Most transitions work smoothly, though a few could be more refined. Contrast and texture are used thoughtfully, if not fully exploited throughout. |
| 3 | Form is recognizable and functional but may rely on standard templates. Some sections feel mis-proportioned, and transitions can be abrupt or mechanical; space is present but not a major expressive tool. |
| 2 | Structural choices are often uncertain or uneven. Long stretches feel static; climaxes may not be prepared or resolved convincingly, and transitions can seem forced or confusing with limited use of space. |
| 1 | The arrangement lacks a coherent sense of journey. Sections appear stitched together without a clear plan; transitions are jarring or absent, and there is little sense of direction from beginning to end. |
Category 5 - Score & Parts, Clarity, and Playability
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 5 | Notation is clean, consistent, and easy to interpret. Ranges and technical demands are idiomatic; roadmaps, articulations, dynamics, and style markings are clear and help musicians realize the musical intent quickly. |
| 4 | Score and parts are generally clear and usable, with minor issues. Some notational choices may slow rehearsal slightly but do not obscure the musical picture; most ranges and technical passages are appropriate. |
| 3 | Materials are workable but contain enough inconsistencies (articulations, form directions, enharmonics, ranges) to require extra rehearsal time. The music is playable but not optimally presented. |
| 2 | Notation problems regularly interfere with rehearsal: confusing layouts, unclear form directions, or difficult-to-read rhythms. Some ranges or technical passages may be impractical for the musicians. |
| 1 | Score and parts are so unclear or impractical that they significantly obstruct performance; key information about form, style, dynamics, or ranges is missing, inconsistent, or misleading. |
Non-scored "Miles-Inspired Elements" (Comment Only)
You can put this as a short comment box under the table on your form:
- Use of space, contrast, and understatement.
- Modal or coloristic harmonic language.
- Subtle use of timbre (mutes, textures, dynamics).
- Risk-taking that serves the music.
